History of phanTECHNIKUM
The Technical State Museum has had a long and varied history. On November 11, 1961 the Minister of Education of the GDR opened the "Polytechnische Museum Schwerin." In 1990 it was renamed to the Technical State Museum (Technisches Landesmuseum). Between 1961 and 1994 the Technical State Museum belonged to most popular destinations in Schwerin. The exhibition in the orangery of the castle was one of the few museum facilities for technology and production in the GDR.
With the exodus from the castle after 1990 the country ended its sponsorship, which was taken over by the "Technisches Landesmuseum Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V.," an organization founded in 1996. The Technical State Museum moved into the Schwerin Stables. Since 2002, there has been a second place of exhibition - the Wismar Greenhouse. The Technical State Museum presents a technology exhibition in the public park building, which is open from April to October. At the beginning of 2011, the Technical State Museum bid farewell to its exhibition from Schwerin. On the 1st December 2012, phanTECHNIKUM is to unite both previous exhibitions under one roof and present them anew. Support of the project is by the non-profit organization of the Technical State Museum of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern mbH and the hanseatic city of Wismar.

The phanTECHNIKUM. A new adventure center in Wismar!
Look, experiment, invent, and discover. The phanTECHNIKUM in Wismar makes it possible. In the fall of 2012, the adventure center on Lübschen Burg street opened in the Hanseatic city to inspire technology enthusiasts, experimenters, and amateur inventors.
The Technical State Museum sets out in a new direction with phanTECHNIKUM. Up to now the non-profit operating company looked after the exhibition in the Schwerin Stables and the Wismar Greenhouse. Both presentations dealt with the history of technology in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The phanTECHNIKUM will present, unite, and expand the two exhibitions in a completely new form under one roof.
At a former military site, the adventure center will receive visitors from near and far. The exhibition appeals to emotion and intellect, brings imagination, education, technology, and an adventurous world together in one building. An interactive exhibition with experiments, models, and hands-on labs will make the museum a lively institution in the future.
Besides the view into history, the present also does not go unmentioned: What are the inventions of the past? What developments are there today? A look back into history, and forward into the future show the four elements: fire, water, air, and earth. They divide the themes of the exhibition so the visitor becomes an explorer who enters a laboratory through a "fire tunnel," experiences wondrous experiments, or climbs the "water staircase."
The phanTECHNIKUM is aimed at a broad audience. Young and old are welcome from fall 2012. Not only tourists should use the services of the museum, but also engineers, students, apprentices and, student groups. Workshops, seminars, tours, and other events round out the exhibition. Especially in the summer months there will be many events that complement the happenings at phanTECHNIKUM.
